A fantastic apartment in an old building right in the city center, with a rooftop terrace perfect for a glass of wine or beer. Good to know the stairs inside are quite steep. The owner, Mike, is super friendly and answered all my questions by email within hours.

Your search for the perfect place to stay in Amsterdam ends here. The apartment is perfectly situated next to cute shops, a grocery store, and a tram line — far enough from the tourist crowds but only a 15-minute walk to Central Station and the main sights and museums. We had a wonderful time trying restaurants in the area, including one of the city’s oldest bakeries, which likely makes the best stroopwafels around. The apartment was clean, beautifully decorated, and a great place to come back to in the afternoon or after a night out. The stairs, both up to and inside the apartment, are steep but manageable, and very true to the era and location.

Quaint and eclectic, though not without its age-related quirks. The location was excellent — a supermarket on the corner, several great spots for coffee and breakfast, and two restaurants just over the canal serving traditional Dutch cuisine. The kitchen and living room were large with plenty of light and lovely big windows, and the decorations were lovely; it’s also close to the Anne Frank House and just a few blocks from a street full of shops. The listing wasn’t fully accurate, though — the original wooden floors need real care, there’s one bathroom without a toilet plus two separate water closets, and while it’s listed as sleeping four, only one bedroom is actually pictured (a pull-out couch and a king bed). For us, the stairs and wooden floors were the toughest part of the stay — a long, roughly 20-step entrance staircase plus two narrow, winding flights of 10-15 steps, one leading to the first floor and the other up to the bedrooms; the stairs to the bedrooms were so narrow and winding that we never brought our suitcases up there, and had to rig a pulley system just to bring them back down to the street. Despite the great location, the stairs make this a tough stay for some — we were three seniors, all 73, capable of walking several miles or 18,000-20,000 steps a day, and it was still a challenge. Mike was a good host, though — he even carried our heavy suitcases up to the first floor and was always responsive.
