Description

The Winery Estate is a unique blend of traditional architecture, history, and modern comfort in the peaceful village of Megalochori, one of Santorini’s true hidden gems, sleeping up to 12 guests. It’s an easy stroll to the picturesque village square with its tavernas, shops, mini market, and well-known bakery, and a short drive from anywhere on the island, including the Caldera, Fira, Oia, Amoudi Bay, and the beaches of Perissa and Kamari. Dating back to the 17th century, the property was originally a working winery called ‘Canava Beko,’ which exported wine across the Aegean — the slightly sloping floors once channeled pressed grapes into pits still visible today (now covered with reinforced glass), and an old pulley once used to load wine barrels onto donkeys still hangs from the living room ceiling. The estate fell into disrepair after the winery closed around 1930, and underwent a careful seven-year restoration starting in 2008 to become the property it is today, furnished with pieces chosen to complement its unique architecture. The main house sleeps 10 across four air-conditioned bedrooms and three bathrooms, with a large, fully equipped kitchen and a lounge and dining area built around an open fireplace, plus a flat-screen TV with Netflix and DVDs for quieter nights in; laundry facilities and towels are provided. A separate, self-contained cavern house — the ‘Bergonia Suite’ — sleeps two more, with its own bathroom, jacuzzi, kitchenette, dining terrace, and entrance off the pool terrace, ideal for a romantic stay within the group. Outside, three large private terraces make the most of the setting: the Pool Terrace with a 40-square-meter pool, loungers, and a pagoda; the Roof Terrace with a hammock, loungers, and a shaded dining area; and the Main Terrace with a built-in double barbecue and dining for 12. All three take in views over local vineyards, village churches, the windmills of Vlychada, and the Aegean beyond. Car and bike hire, plus airport transfers, can be arranged on request.

The accommodation was delightful, with rooms that provided wonderful seclusion. Positioned conveniently near a charming small village boasting excellent dining establishments. We found ourselves preferring to dine in the village rather than heading into Fira.

Outstanding

Our extended family traveled to Santorini for a family wedding, and the Villa surpassed all expectations. Beautifully maintained while honoring its heritage as a traditional winery, it remained wonderfully cool throughout the hot season. The property is fully equipped with excellent finishes—nothing has been compromised. Sarah, the proprietor, was remarkably attentive before our arrival, while her manager Pedros consistently responded to any requests during our stay. Sarah also coordinated driver Panos to collect us from the airport and remain at our disposal for the entire week. Panos was absolutely wonderful and proved to be invaluable.

Our stay at The Winery Estate was wonderful, despite May bringing some atypical weather conditions—cold winds and rain. Leaving was genuinely difficult.

The bedroom situated above the kitchen suits older children nicely but presents challenges for adults, with its narrow staircase, limited floor space, and restricted options for storing belongings.

Petros, the estate’s property manager, was truly outstanding and consistently went that extra step for us. When one of our group fell ill and needed medical care during the visit, Petros’s support was crucial. We’re profoundly grateful—without his assistance, we genuinely wouldn’t have known how to proceed.

Because of Petros’s generosity and care, our time at The Winery Estate turned out to be genuinely wonderful despite everything. Would certainly recommend the property!

Our wedding celebration took place aboard a catamaran in Santorini, and this magnificent estate provided accommodations for ourselves and our guests. The beautifully restored home has an enchanting quality. Highly suitable for large groups or multiple families.

Outstanding Experience

This remarkable location stands as a truly distinctive retreat where the proprietors have masterfully preserved vintage winery components and incorporated them into the home’s design. Getting to the residence means ascending several steep flights of stairs—this presented no challenge for us, though individuals with mobility restrictions might find this problematic. Given its cave dwelling construction, the interior can become somewhat reverberant when guests are enjoying themselves—laughing, engaging in games—though I’m uncertain what solutions could mitigate this acoustic matter.

The dwelling was comprehensively furnished and pleasantly situated in a peaceful village, positioned away from the island’s more congested zones—an aspect our entire party genuinely enjoyed. Every day we encountered numerous animals in the area, including chickens, roosters, cats, donkeys, horses, and even homing pigeons, which truly contributed to the property’s special character.

Touring the island necessitates having access to a vehicle, and it’s absolutely worth it! The island contains wonderful things to discover!

Sarah was impressively attentive in handling our inquiries and accommodating our requests, and we valued her venue suggestions. We also followed up on her recommendation of Panos, a regional guide, for our day excursion, and he proved to be exceptional! It was a remarkable visit overall and we would absolutely suggest this property for families and larger groups! We’re genuinely thankful for your warmth and the opportunity to spend time in your splendid home.

Sarah proved to be an excellent host throughout the planning process and our arrival. The location offers convenient proximity to a bakery and dining options. Truly a stunning property!

Abundant outdoor areas, cozy beds, and Sarah’s exceptional service. Certain appliances and bathrooms could benefit from modernization, but when the dishwasher malfunctioned, Sarah had it replaced within 24 hours.
